Under the Universal Service Obligation, Royal Mail are the only company that deliver letter mail to all UK postal addresses.
Royal Mail’s postage discount principle is based simply on how much of their job is replaced by the customer.
Example one, the customer puts a stamp on an envelope, this means the stamp has to be verified, often manually, and the automated Royal Mail system cannot verify the postcode so no discount is offered from the standard tariff.
Example two, the customer uses a franking machine to print a Mailmark frank with a barcode that the scanners can read, therefore the Royal Mail process is easier and offers a discount.
Example three, the customer through a hybrid mail driver securely sends documents to a central processing facility whereby they are printed and inserted and then submitted to Royal Mail at a Royal Mail downstream access centre (DSA) nationally. Royal Mail’s only remaining task is the final mile delivery and therefore they offer their highest level of discount.
Royal Mail also provide a service for parcels and packets which is often very competitive but should be checked dependent on the particular type of parcel and delivery requirements against the other providers like Parcelforce, DHL, UPS, Hermes etc.
Royal Mail prices for letters, parcels and packets processed through a franking machine are dependent on size of letter (standard or large), in the case of parcels and packets, weight and dimensions. On these a franked label is required.
